Battle Room

“Power cannot be centralized; rather, it is diffused, decentralized, and in consequence,

anonymous: it exists less as a ‘body’ than as a network of relations unifying social

apparatuses and institutions”

-Kruger (1990)

Our bodies are a battleground. Every day we go to war with our internal and external desires. We are pushing the body to its limits, causing it either physical pain or pleasure. Our mind and body work in a form of chaos and order. However, what I want to

portray is the struggle of letting ones personality come through. With society’s force to mold the public into labeled boxes, while any attempt to break the ‘norm’ to be seen is viewed negatively. The question that needs to be asked is: how can you, as an individual, let your inner-self be visible? The human body can be interoperated as a prison to keep the individualism of ones identity locked away. That the gaze society puts on the individual is to gain control over their image, creating a deep tension between social and internal identity. Receiving inspiration from the musical composition Battle Room by Steve Jablonsky, I show the struggle a person goes through; the feelings, the desires, the hurt, loneness and frustration of going against your natural state. Like the melody,

fighting and working for a second to be heard, I want this harmony of paint and music to lead the viewer on an emotion journey. To reflect and take a step back on how they go

into battle with themselves.
